Day 1 of Fraudmas: The Great Holiday Fake Store Scam

By Topside FCU December 3, 2025 Fraud information

Why those “too good to be true” deals are exactly that.

The holiday shopping season is stressful enough with shipping deadlines, sold-out toys, and the annual race to get a good parking spot. But now, scammers have upped their game: AI-generated fake online stores have entered the chat.

These sites look shockingly real. They have beautiful photography, perfect grammar, and big holiday sales that feel impossible to beat.

Example: You're scrolling late at night and see a sponsored ad for a $39 Dyson hair tool. You feel blessed. You click. The website looks crisp. Reviews glow. You check out. Then…nothing arrives. Ever. Because the site was built by a scammer and the products don't actually exist.

Fraudulent website

What to look for on “sale” sites

  • Brand-new sites with huge discounts and countdown timers.
  • Too-perfect product photos that look copied from big retailers.
  • Sketchy policies like no real returns, no address, or only a contact form.
  • Pressure tactics like “Only 3 left!” on every item.

If the deal feels magical in a suspicious way, pause and verify before you buy.

How these fake stores work

Scammers use AI tools to:

  • Generate polished logos
  • Build professional websites
  • Write glowing fake reviews
  • Run convincing ads
  • Create fake customer service numbers

How to protect yourself

  • Inspect the URL like Sherlock Holmes. Look for:
    • Misspellings (Patagoina.com)
    • Extra words (Nike-clearance.shop)
    • Weird endings (.xyz, .store, .click)
  • Shop using official apps. If you normally shop through Amazon, Target, or Walmart, stick to the official app.
  • Type the website URL yourself. Don’t click ads, DMs, or random links.
  • Search “is ___ legit?” If it’s a known scam, someone has probably complained already.
  • The Better Business Bureau has a great article about fake websites right here.
