Day 10 of Fraudmas: The Urgent Message Scam
By December 4, 2025 Fraud information
Scammers want you panicking.Scammers rely on one major strategy: manufactured urgency. If they can get you to react emotionally, you stop thinking logically—and that's when mistakes happen. |
A typical urgent scam message:
- “Your account will be closed in 1 hour!”
- “A package is being returned!”
- “Your device is infected!”
- “Your card is locked—verify immediately!”
- “Your account had suspicious activity—log in NOW!”
The more dramatic the message, the more likely it’s fake.
Realistic scenario
You’re out holiday shopping and get a text: “Your debit card has been suspended due to fraud. Click here to reactivate before 3 PM.”
It’s 2:37 PM. You’re stressed. You click. Your info is stolen.
How to stay grounded:
1. Stop and breathe. Urgency = scammer tactic.
2. Ask yourself: Does this message make me feel panicked? If yes, pause.
3. Never click the link. Go to the company’s official website or app.
4. Verify independently. Call the company using a verified number, not the one in the message.
5. Remember: real companies don’t threaten you via text.
Holiday takeaway:
If someone pressures you to act NOW, it’s probably a con. Slow down and think it through before acting out of panic.
