Day 11 of Fraudmas: The Holiday Phishing Email Explosion
By December 4, 2025
AI-made scam emails look real... here’s how to beat them.Phishing used to be easy to spot. Red flags like weird or incorrect grammar, incorrect logos, strange formatting, and obviously fake sender addresses helped consumers spot the scam. But now AI writes clean, convincing emails that could fool almost anyone.
|
A very believable example
You receive an email from what looks like UPS:
“Your package is unable to be delivered. Please download your delivery form.”
Logo: correct. Formatting: spotless. Subject line: professional. Attachment: malware.
One click → your whole device is compromised.
What AI phishing emails often include:
- Exact brand colors
- Copied email layouts
- Realistic subject lines
- Familiar sender name (but slightly off email address)
- Perfect grammar
- Urgent tone
How to spot the fakes:
1. Hover over links. If the URL looks weird… don’t click.
2. Check the sender address carefully. Example:
Real: support@amazon.com
Fake: support@amaz0n-secure.com
3. Don’t open unexpected attachments. Especially ZIP files or PDFs you didn’t ask for.
4. Be suspicious of emails asking for personal info. Real companies don’t ask you to “verify your password.”
5. Look for details that don’t fit. Scammers often get small things wrong (like phrasing or formatting).
Holiday takeaway:
If an email creates urgency or asks you to click something immediately, it’s probably a scam. Take a moment to inspect before opening or clicking.
