Day 7 of Fraudmas: The “Fake Fraud Department” Scam
By December 4, 2025 Fraud information
When the number looks real… but the caller isn’tIf you only read ONE Fraudmas article this year, make it this one. Scammers have gotten very good at pretending to be your financial institution, especially around the holidays when people feel rushed and financially stressed. Using spoofing technology, scammers can make your caller ID say anything, even “Topside FCU” or “Fraud Department.” That’s why these scams work so well. |
A realistic, panic-inducing scenario:
Your phone rings. You’re wrapping gifts and trying to remember where you sat the Scotch tape. Caller ID says: “Topside FCU”.
You answer. The caller sounds professional and calm: “Hi, we detected suspicious activity on your card. To secure your account, can you verify your full card number and PIN?”
It sounds legit. It looks legit. But none of it is.
How the scam works:
- Spoof our phone number
- Use stolen member data to sound convincing
- Create urgency (“Your account is at risk!”)
- Ask for sensitive information we would NEVER request
- Steal your login, drain your funds, or take over your account
AI voice tools now help them copy tone, cadence, and even mimic call-center professionalism.
How to protect yourself:
1. Know what we will NEVER ask for. Topside FCU will NEVER call, text, or email asking for:
- Your full card number
- Your PIN
- Your CVV (three-digit code)
- Your online banking password
- A secure access code someone just texted you
If the caller asks for any of these → SCAM.
2. Hang up and call us back using our official number. If it’s really us, we won’t be offended.
3. Read secure access code texts carefully. They often say “Do not share this code.” If someone is on the phone telling you to read it aloud, hang up and call the official company phone number.
4. Be suspicious of urgent tone. Real fraud representatives, especially at Topside, are here to help you. Scammers will rush you.
Holiday takeaway:
Just because a call LOOKS like it’s coming from your credit union does not mean it IS. Treat every unexpected financial call like a stranger at your door: verify before you trust.
