Day 8 of Fraudmas: AI Deepfakes & “Grandma, I Need Help!” Scams

By Topside FCU December 4, 2025 Fraud information

A chilling real-world scenario:

Your phone rings late at night. You answer groggily. You hear your grandchild’s voice (their actual voice) say:

“Grandma, I’m in trouble. I need help. Please don’t tell mom. I need you to wire money now.”

You freeze. Your heart drops. It sounds EXACTLY like your grandchild...but it’s not them.

How scammers pull this off:

  • They scrape audio from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, or voicemail greetings.
  • AI clones the voice in seconds.
  • They pretend to be a distressed family member.
  • They demand secrecy and urgency.
  • You send money… and it’s gone for good.

Other deepfake holiday scams:

  • Fake calls from “banks”
  • Fake charity calls
  • Fake bosses
  • Fake shipping/delivery notifications
  • Fake “prize” or “sweepstakes” confirmations

How to protect yourself:

1. Establish a family code word. Make sure everyone knows it—especially older relatives.

2. Always hang up and call the person directly. Use a saved contact number, not the one calling you.

3. Treat emotion + urgency as a red flag. Scammers WANT you panicking.

4. Never send money under pressure. Real emergencies don’t require secrecy.

Holiday takeaway:

Scammers know to target your heartstrings. Slow down, verify, and trust your instincts, not the voice on the phone.
