Day 9 of Fraudmas: Weak Passwords & Account Takeovers
By December 4, 2025 Fraud information
Because “password123” is the gift scammers love the most.Scammers thrive on predictable, reused, or outdated passwords. The holidays bring increased online shopping, more accounts being created, and more sign-ins from devices you’re not used to. And all of this means more opportunities for scammers to break in.

A common takeover scenario:
Your password is something simple like “Winter2022!” You use it for:
- Amazon
- Netflix
- Online banking
- Rewards programs
- Everything, basically
A retailer gets hacked. Your password leaks. Scammers try it everywhere. They get into your email, reset your banking password, log in, and take over.
All because one password was reused.
The holiday security upgrade you NEED:
1. Use long, unique passwords. Think story phrases: “Ilovemycreditunionsomuchtheyaregreat2025”.
2. Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere. Preferably using text, authenticator app, or biometric login.
3. Change old passwords. Anything older than last holiday season is a risk.
4. Use a password manager so you don’t go insane.
5. Set up account alerts for things like failed login attempts, new devices, changes to your contact info, and new payees or transfers.
Holiday takeaway:
This is the perfect season to refresh passwords and lock down your digital life. Future you will be very grateful.
